Lathes & Turning

Centre lathes — inspected, running, and serviced by the people who sell them.

A centre lathe is judged on four numbers: swing over the bed, distance between centres, spindle bore, and how much weight the bedways will carry between centres. Those decide whether the shafts, rollers and flanges you actually turn will fit — everything else is preference.

A1 carries used lathes and services them too: spindle bearings, gearbox work, leadscrew and feed faults are all regular jobs in the workshop. Machines on this page can be seen running under power before you commit.

Common questions

What size lathe do I need?

Start from the largest part you turn: diameter drives swing, length drives distance between centres, and bar work drives spindle bore. Buy for the job you take on next year rather than the one on the bench today — capacity is the thing shops most often wish they had bought more of.

Do you service lathes as well as sell them?

Yes. Spindle bearing replacement, gearbox and feed repairs, and general overhaul are ordinary work here — the same technician who inspects a machine before sale is the one who looks after it afterwards.

Already running one? A1 services what it sells — machinery service, repair & diagnostics.
