Guillotine Shears

Hydraulic guillotines, 3000–6000 mm cutting lengths — supplied & supported by A1.

Even in a shop with a laser, the guillotine earns its floor space: a cold, clean, straight cut with no heat-affected zone, no discolouration on pre-painted or galvanised sheet, and a far lower cost per straight blank. A1 supplies hydraulic guillotines in 3000, 4000 and 6000 mm cutting lengths across a range of thickness capacities.

(If you know the machine as a shear — same thing: guillotine is the Australian term.) Machines are supplied Australia-wide; across SE Queensland and by scheduled fly-in, A1 also does the work that keeps a guillotine cutting square: installation and levelling, blade changeover and clearance setting, hold-down and hydraulic service.

Common questions

Do I still need a guillotine if I have a laser?

For straight blanking, usually yes. A guillotine cuts cold — no heat-affected zone, no edge discolouration on pre-painted or galv sheet — and costs a fraction per straight cut. The laser earns its keep on profiles; the guillotine on rectangles.

What thickness can a guillotine cut?

Common shop machines handle 2.5–6 mm mild steel across 2.5–4 metre lengths; heavier machines go well beyond. Stainless derates capacity by roughly a third. Check the machine's rated capacity against the hardest material you cut, not the most common one.

Why is my guillotine leaving a burr or a bad edge?

Almost always blade gap set wrong for the thickness (it should be roughly 5–10% of material thickness), blunt blades, or worn blade seats. Blade setting is precise, safety-critical work — it's one of A1's standard services.
